Lone Tree over Lake Three

Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Minnesota

 MN-98-48-BW
The only way to get this composition was to stand on a large boulder in the middle of Lake Three. There was enough room for my tripod, camera bag and myself, but not enough room for the canoe. So I tethered the vessel to my ankle with a rope. Each time I exposed a sheet of film and turned the film holder around in the camera my body would move and invariably so would the canoe, creating ripples on the nice calm water. I'd spend the next 60-90 seconds waiting for the tiny ripples to subside before exposing another sheet and starting the process over again. I exposed five sheets before the sun cracked the horizon and put an end to the show. Photo © copyright by Gary Alan Nelson.
